For most people, ironing is the least favorite household chore. But sometimes certain garments need to be ironed, so you can't avoid this annoying task. Ironing Service Haaglanden has some tips for you.
Here are our tips to avoid ironing or at least reduce the amount of ironing you have to do.
- Do you have wrinkle-prone clothes ready for washing? Make sure not to overfill the drum, as this actually causes a lot of wrinkles.
- Using a lower spin speed also helps your clothes come out less wrinkled.
- Remove the laundry from the drum immediately once the cycle is finished.
- Before hanging washed clothes, give them a quick shake and then let them dry hanging, preferably on a hanger. However, do not do this with stretch fabrics as it may cause the shape to distort, which is unfortunate.
- Is your clothing still a bit wrinkled? Hang the garment in the bathroom while you shower. The steam will help smooth out small wrinkles, very handy!
If these tips aren’t enough, there’s no choice but to take your iron out of the closet. Below are some handy ironing tips:
- Ensure you have a sturdy ironing board and enough space to work comfortably.
- Your iron should, of course, be clean and smooth on the bottom.
- Always check the label to see how hot the garment can be ironed. If the iron symbol has one dot, iron on low heat; two dots mean medium heat; and three dots mean high heat. If there is a cross over the iron symbol, do not iron the garment.
- The best results come when the garment is damp. You can achieve this with steam (some irons have this feature) or by moistening the garment with a spray bottle. Alternatively, placing a damp tea towel or cloth over the garment while ironing also works very well!
- You can iron knitted clothing, but do it a bit differently. Instead of moving the iron back and forth, press the iron briefly onto the fabric. This prevents the garment from losing its shape.
- Do you have clothing with beads, sequins, or (printed) patterns? It's best to iron these inside out.
- It's not good for the soleplate of your iron to iron over buttons and zippers, as this can damage the iron.
- Shirt sleeves are always quite tricky to iron. This becomes easier if you stuff the sleeve with a towel. Some ironing boards even have special narrow sections for this purpose.
- There is special 'ironing spray' that makes your clothes smell fresh and results in a smoother finish. You can also make this yourself by adding a splash of fabric softener to the water reservoir.
